2015 Year, school performance

We were again awarded with the subsidy from the Ministry of Education for the 2015-2016 Teaching Excellence Project. This was the second year we ran this program, with nearly 70% more subsidy of NT$ 100 million, the 9th highest in Taiwan. Since 2013, we have received a total of NT$160 million in subsidies. 
[About the University]
Our university was founded in 1996 by the Buddhist monk Hsing Yun, together with the support from millions of followers at Fo Guang Shan. We are known for our emphasis on humanity, religion and art subjects and an interdisciplinary approach. Our university is dedicated to the offering of general education and the development of humanistic spirits. We currently have five colleges (i.e. College of Management, College of Humanities, College of Social Sciences, College of Arts and Design, College of Science and Technology), and Center for General Education. There are a total of 19 departments for undergraduate students and 24 master’s degree programs as well as a PhD program for postgraduates. In 2014, we had a total of 5,302 students. Assistant professors and above account for 99.1% of our full-time teachers and 92% of them have PhD degrees. According to Common Wealth Magazine, we rank number 1 in terms of our teaching resources amongst private universities in Taiwan. Our strong team of teachers and professors has produced outstanding achievements in teaching and research. They have also guided students to win various awards and competitions. 
 [Improvement of Quality of Admitted Students]
The overall registration rate went up from 72% in the 2012 academic year to 97% in the 2015 academic year.
The number of students with 40 percent and above increased from 212 in the 2012 academic year to 1,343 in 2015 academic year.
We achieved the largest improvement in the quality of admitted students over the past two years in comparison to other universities in Taiwan. The number of students with medium to high scores has increased significantly. 
 [New Constructions and Buildings]
The Nine-Stage Lotus Walkway through the center of the campus and the remodeling of the university front have both been completed.
We received support from the Ministry of Education to establish the Life Education Centre for Taiwan. The space planning had been completed with an administration zone and an open forum for discussions. There is a library of data and books, a multi-purpose activity area, a multimedia showcase and conference rooms. The Life Education Center serves as a learning ground for life education. 
Building of Dependent Origination (dormitory for students) has come online, with a total of 1,452 beds for new students this year. 
We are planning to set up the “E Academy” in our “Boundless Treasury Library”. It contains a consultation area, an interactivity room with high specifications, flipped classrooms, Insight Learning Zone, 3D Creativity Center, a digital multimedia center and a virtual studio. Students can achieve insight learning in non-traditional methods and the E Academy can facilitate resources sharing among departments and faculties.
The site for the new teaching building, “The Middle Path” completed the purification ceremony on March 20 and the construction license was issued on June 29.
Million-Member Fundraising Campaign Memorial Hall, Ethnic Folk Music and Activity Center are all under planning and construction.
 [Differentiated Teaching]
  1. Our brand name as a life educator has been well-recognized, evidenced by the support from the Ministry of Education to establish a Life Education Center for Taiwan. Our long-standing efforts in life education have paid off. We promote the rites of passage and meditation. We sponsor “pearl students” (from poor families), offer massive open online courses (moocs) in life education, and we have established Life Story Building. We have passed the review process and won the support from the Ministry of Education to build up the Life Education Center for Taiwan. In a nutshell, we are the only university in Taiwan dedicated to life education. Going forward, we will integrate creativity education, ethics education and aesthetic education into life education so as to create a campus of truth, beauty, wonder and vitality. We hope to see the development of the service industry for the benefit of the body, the mind and the soul. In 2015, we received the award from the Ministry of Education as a characteristic school focusing on life education. 
  1. “Campus of Three Good Things” and Dedication to Ethics Education
In response to the Three Good Things Movement orchestrated by the university founder, the Buddhist monk Hsing Yun, we are ever committed to nurturing the character of our students with the promotion of doing good deeds, speaking good words and thinking good thoughts. By doing, speaking and thinking about the good things via activities and services, our students are encouraged to put into practice the knowledge and virtues that has been instilled in them through their learning. Our university has deployed Lamps of Three Good Things in the courtyard of all the administrative and teaching buildings so that our teachers and students are reminded of doing good things. We hope our Campus of Three Good Things works as a catalyst for societal positivity by promoting good deeds and harmony.
  1. Low tuitions comparable with state universities and scholarships to outstanding and disadvantaged students
We started to offer scholarships to outstanding and disadvantaged students as well as provide overseas study opportunities. We charge tuitions to new students at a level comparable to state universities and offer them scholarships if their grades reach a certain standard. All of these innovative measures have helped students to build and realize their dreams.
  1. Promotion of overseas studies to nurture international mobility of our students
Over 10% of our students have studied short-term overseas.  

We have established alliances with five universities in different countries and constructed the 2+2 double major system by charging tuitions in Taiwan and studying overseas. Over the recent years, we have been running short-term overseas study programs during summer/winter vacations by working with the University of Cambridge, the University of the West and the Nan Tien Institute. Our wish is for our students to participate in curriculums within different countries which will help them to broaden their international outlook and enhance their international competitiveness. 
We organized a study trip to the University of Cambridge in the U.K. during the summer vacation of 2013 by subsidizing the full cost of travel for our ten best students.
We sent 31 students to the University of Cambridge in the U.K. and nine students to the University of the West in the U.S. for summer study in 2014.
In the winter vacation of 2015, six students participated in the overseas study group organized by the Nan Tien Institute. 
In the summer vacation of 2015, a total of 44 students took part in the study camp at the University of Cambridge in the U.K and 11 students went to the University of the West in the U.S. to study English. In the same year, we organized tours for 15 teachers and professors from our university to the University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford for overseas studies. Our off-campus teaching initiative for the summer vacation of 2015 mobilized 10 departments to organize 12 teaching tours for a total of 164 students. 
5. π-type education to develop cross-disciplinary professionals
We implement π-type education to ensure that our students have the cross-disciplinary skills. With modularization, systematization and specialization of our curriculums, we seek to empower our students to develop different interests and acquire a second specialization by taking up classes in different departments and faculties. We also support their preparation for certification exams so that they have at least two specializations and thus have additional options for future prospects. 
6. Emphasis on the integration of theory and practice to better the employability of our students
We are dedicated to the development of life education and insight learning for students by creating the right environment, offering quality teaching and promoting the integration of theory and practice. We actively seek cooperation within the relevant industries so that our students can take up internships to apply what they have learned. We work with dozens of companies and invite industry professionals to collaborate in our teaching. This avoids the gap between knowledge and experience and creates a seamless connection between academic theories and industry practice. In summary, we spare no efforts in the improvement of the employability of our students.  
7. Promotion of environmental sustainability and spiritual purification as the best-in-class university in the world 
Our university is dedicated to environmental sustainability, with our long-standing efforts in carbon reduction and energy efficiency. Our promotion of healthy diet (fruits and vegetables) over recent years has also been well received and recognized with multiple awards. We received the award of excellence from the Ministry of Education for our reduction in wastes, recycling and the reuse of materials. Our results of carbon footprint verification attracted an award for excellence from the Environmental Protection Administration and the Chiayi County Government for environmental education.
In 2015, we initiated a campaign “Statement for Environmental Sustainability and Spiritual Enlightenment” for all the members of Changhua-Yunlin-Chiayi University & College Alliance.
